Cultivating Creativity: What Research Says About the Montessori Environment

A study published in 2019 added to a growing body of scientific research aiming to determine exactly how a Montessori education impacts creativity in students. While continued longitudinal research is always beneficial, the findings offer wonderful insight into the intentional design of our classrooms.


As an Association Montessori International (AMI) recognized school, we often observe our students demonstrating remarkable innovation. We wanted to share the mechanics of this study and look at why the Montessori environment naturally supports creative thinking.


What is Creativity?

Creativity is a notoriously difficult concept to define, and an even more difficult one to measure objectively. In child development, creativity is generally understood as the ability to generate independent, novel ideas that can be practically applied to solve problems or create meaningful new contributions.


Researchers identified a number of distinct traits within the Montessori environment that serve as potential contributing factors in cultivating this ability. Interestingly, many of these elements have been independently proven to support creative thinking across various modern educational studies. These core factors include:


  • An emphasis on independence and autonomous choice
  • The physical differences and layout of the classroom environment
  • Inherent flexibility regarding time and scheduling
  • A deep focus on nurturing intrinsic motivation
  • Daily opportunities for spontaneous collaboration
  • A profound sense of personal control over one’s work and activities


How the Study Was Conducted

The study tracked student development over the course of an entire academic school year, utilizing data collected from two distinct educational settings. The participant group included 77 third graders attending a public Montessori school in the United States and 71 third graders enrolled in a demographically similar, traditional public school.


To evaluate the children, researchers looked at two primary types of cognitive processing:


  • Divergent Thinking: The ability to form completely novel, independent ideas.
  • Convergent Thinking: The ability to logically synthesize, sort, and combine existing ideas.


Most historical studies have only evaluated one of these prongs. To obtain a more comprehensive collection of data, the researchers utilized a specialized assessment called the Evaluation of Potential Creativity (EPoC).


During the assessment, each child participated in three distinct steps:


  1. They were shown eight unrelated, abstract shapes and asked to create a cohesive drawing that combined them.
  2. They were shown eight unrelated, concrete pictures (such as a carrot) and asked to create a drawing combining them.
  3. They were invited to tell an original story about each drawing they created.


To ensure the reliability of the data sample, students were tested initially and then retested with a fresh set of images two weeks later.


How Montessori Measured Up

The collected data revealed two prominent categories that stood out significantly. While the Montessori students performed better overall on the creative assessments, the researchers noted two distinct findings:


  • The Montessori students performed significantly better on the divergent thinking portion of the assessment, demonstrating a highly developed capacity for generating independent, novel concepts.
  • There were distinct, measurable creative benefits observed among the male students within the Montessori environment compared to their traditional peers.


While the authors of the study note that research should always be repeated and expanded upon, these findings add to the robust modern evidence suggesting that the freedom and structure of a Montessori education actively aid in supporting a child's creative potential.
